Paralegal/Legal Studies Handbook Description:
South University’s Legal Studies and Paralegal Studies programs provide opportunities for students to prepare for
a rapidly changing and challenging profession. The American Bar Association (ABA) defines a paralegal as “a person,
qualified by education, training, or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office,
corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for
which a lawyer is responsible.” Paralegals and legal assistants may not give legal advice, set fees, or represent clients
in court, and all students in South University legal studies programs receive instruction in legal ethics and how to
avoid the unauthorized practice of law. (South University Handbook, 2013)
Our Goal:
To provide students with opportunities that accentuate their studies. We are also offer group and one-
on-one study sessions to ensure that all paralegal students succeed. In addition to assistance in all
classes, we provide exciting opportunities through volunteer work, fundraisers, and educational
enrichment opportunities to courthouses, law offices, and locations for externships. These events give
students the chance to help the community while experiencing what working in this field will resemble.
